Hui-Qi Qu, PhD, MSc, BSc
Please welcome Dr. Hui-Qi Qu to the UTSPH Brownsville Regional Campus as an assistant professor in the division of Epidemiology, Human Genetics and Environmental Sciences. Dr. Qu graduated from Tianjin Medical University in China. He comes to us from the Department of Human Genetics at McGill University in Quebec, Canada.
Dr. Qu concentrates his research on the genetics and functional genomics of human complex diseases (e.g. tuberculosis, obesity, and diabetes). In the past several years, he worked on the genetics of type 1 diabetes by candidate-based approach and genome-wide association study (GWAS). This study resulted in the identification of several novel type 1 diabetes (T1D) loci and the elucidation of the functional mechanisms. For functional genomics, he developed a novel high throughput method to discover genetic effects on gene expression at translation level.
Dr. Qu will be working with Dr. Joseph McCormick on the genetics and functional genomics of tuberculosis and diabetes. Through integrating proteomics, genomics, and GWAS study, they will try to clarify the molecular mechanisms of tuberculosis susceptibility, and develop genetic markers for diabetes risk prediction.
Dr. Qu is also the associate editor of the Journal of Medical Genetics.
